CHO August 2018 Why Fall Planting is Better with Chestnut Hill Outdoors

Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today, and that especially applies to planting trees. Many folks might think they’ve missed their window of opportunity and should hold off their work until next Spring, but quite the opposite is true. If you’re planning on planting a mast orchard, there’s no time like the present, and here’s why.

You’re already there. If you live on or near your hunting grounds this is less of an issue. However, many people travel some distance to build food plots in the spring, to prepare for the fall hunting season and possibly even slip in an early bow hunt in the fall. By planting now you can kill two birds, and possibly a deer or two, with one stone. Combine your pre-season scouting, stand maintenance and fall tree planting into one trip. If the bow season opens early enough you may even get some time on the stand.

It’s better for plants. Trees slow down their growth and go dormant in the fall, but even without leaves they continue to grow roots throughout the fall and winter, as long as the ground is not frozen. This is particularly beneficial to young trees as it gives them a chance to become acclimated to their environment before the stress of growing season. As a result, they actually come out stronger the following spring. Additionally, fall usually brings frontal rains that water the trees naturally, and because tree are slowing down in growth and going dormant, they require less water. This is especially good for locations where you cannot easily get water to the trees after planting.

You get a head start. By planting in the fall you and your plants will be that much further ahead the following year. Many of the tree varieties from Chestnut Hill Outdoors are developed to begin producing fruit within 2-3 years. Whether it’s 2 or 3 can sometimes depend on when they were planted, with fall plantings usually having the edge.
