Crabapple and Other Native Varieties From Chestnut Hill Outdoors

Crabapple and Other Native Varieties From Chestnut Hill Outdoors

One of the principle benefits of mast orchards over food plots is that once established, they require far less effort. That’s particularly true of native varieties as they’ve persisted in the wild for eons with virtually no care or maintenance. They also have high survival rates because they’re being placed into the natural environment in which they’ve evolved over eons, including soil, moisture and temperature.

One example is the Native Crabapple (Malus angustifolia). This small native tree produces beautiful pink blossoms in the spring and small red-green crabapples – a favorite food for deer and other wildlife – in the fall. They begin bearing fruit in 3-5 yrs and Chestnut Hill Outdoors has selected varieties with longer ripening times, and that hold their fruit over a longer period so deer keep coming back to feed throughout the fall, from September through December.
