Kayak angler takes home $2,000 in winnings
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (October 2, 2018) – Derek Engle, of Spring Hill, Florida, measured a combined limit of 48.00 inches to win the final regular-season event for the 2018 Florida East Division of the IFA Kayak Fishing Tour presented by Hobie Fishing on September 30 at Jacksonville, Florida.
A former IFA Divisional Angler of the Year, Engle has routinely finished in the top three. The angler put in at the Indian River Lagoon where he caught his limit on soft plastics and topwater baits.
“It was windy but turned out to be a good day,” said Engle. “The wind made it tough but just slowed down my approach.”
Engle measured a 28-inch redfish and a 20-inch speckled sea trout. For his first-place finish, he won $1,000 along with a Power-Pole Micro Anchor and added an extra $378 in Anglers Advantage cash.
Joe Komyati, of Raleigh, North Carolina, is another familiar face on the IFA Kayak Tour with two previous first-place finishes. Komyati began by jigging the river before transitioning over to throwing soft plastics in creeks. The angler’s 32.50-inch redfish won the $100 Berkley Big Redfish award for a total of $1,055 in winnings.
Third-place finisher Dave Jaskiewiez, of Wando, South Carolina, measured a total of 45.50 inches to win $395. He started his day fishing in St. John’s River before moving to creeks and marshes later in the day.
“The morning was perfect,” said Jaskiewiez. “I tried for bulls in the river but couldn’t get any. I switched to the creeks and the wind increased and so did the bite. I fished top-water baits and heavy jigs with Gulp while in the river and fished suspended hardbaits and paddle tails in the creeks and marsh. I am happy with third but disappointed I couldn’t get the big bull red I was after.”
The next stop for the IFA Kayak Tour is the championship event at Hopedale, Louisiana, on October 19-20. Anglers who enter at least two events and compete in at least one event will be qualified for the 2018 IFA Kayak Tour Championship.
