There is a large amount at stake for this week’s event. The first-place winner will leave the event with a $100,000 prize. And as it relates to angler of the year, the cancelation of the Huk Bassmaster Elite at Upper Chesapeake Bay presented by Mossy Oak has added additional suspense to this week’s tournament as anglers have one last chance to claim their ticket to fish for the AOY title. The anglers that find themselves in the top 50 angler of the year standing after this event will advance to fish in the Toyota AOY Championship on Lake Chatuge, Sept. 20-23.
Currently sitting in 5th place in the Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings is Mossy Oak Fishing Pro Ott DeFoe. DeFoe explained:
“The St. Lawrence River is such an awesome fishery and I’m really excited to be up here this week. The smallmouth here are as big and fat as anywhere I’ve ever been. It’s going to be a great week and should reveal typical smallmouth fishing. There will be some weights submitted each day. I think to do well, anglers will need to catch twenty-plus pounds per day.
For me, this week is going to be all about spinning rods as is typical with smallmouth. I will employ those all week and focus on taking my time fighting these big smallmouth to get them in the boat on light line. The water is so clear here that you have to use light line to expect to get bites. That’ll be the name of the game for me this week: spinning rods, smallmouth and light tackle.”
The Mossy Oak Fishing Team, all leaders in the sport of bass fishing, Kevin VanDam, Jordan Lee, Ott DeFoe, Matt Lee, Gerald Swindle and Brandon Palaniuk – will be on-site, fishing hard. Follow Mossy Oak Fishing’s Facebook page and Instagram page for live updates from the event and the anglers.
Coming off of a win at this event last year is the winningest angler in fishing history, Kevin VanDam. VanDam said, “I love to fish the St. Lawrence due to all of the smallmouth that live here. This week should produce some of the biggest fish numbers weighed in for this year’s Elite season. I’m sure excited for what may unfold here!”
