Summit Coffee Roasting Company is pleased to announce that it has become an official partner of 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses, individuals and nonprofit organizations tackling our planet’s most pressing environmental issues. By certifying this partnership, Summit Coffee Roasting Company commits to give back at least 1% of revenue generated from sales to non-profit organizations. SCRC is a subsidiary of Summit Coffee™, a quickly growing NC-based coffee and retail café brand.
This official designation deepens Summit Coffee’s core promise to go beyond sustainability by striving to make responsible, creative, and sustainable decisions within every realm of the business. Summit Coffee’s roasting business, which imports specialty coffee from around the world and distributes nationwide, also is certified Organic. In 2021, 82.35% of all coffee that Summit roasted was certified organic, while 60.53% came from women producers, a remarkable achievement in an industry dominated by primarily male voices. Also in 2022, Summit is removing the surcharge for alternative milks in all of its cafés, aiming to set the standard for how specialty coffee can make impactful decisions.
“For Summit, we see commitments like 1% for the Planet part of our responsibility, not just a choice,” said Brett Dioguardi, Summit Coffee’s Director of Sustainability and Supply Chain. “Climate change is perhaps the greatest crisis facing our world right now, and businesses like Summit – and those much bigger than us – need to make choices with our world in mind. The collection of brands that partner with 1% for the Planet showcases how impactful that organization is as a leader in sustainability.”
“As Summit grows, our footprint and our spotlight grows,” said Brian Helfrich, Summit Coffee’s CEO, “and it’s our objective to make sure we’re doing that as positively as possible. For Summit, that means not only making thoughtful decisions, but also showcasing to other businesses the opportunities that are available to us. Our coffee roasting business has a larger impact than anything else we do, so being intentional about every aspect from sourcing to bagging is imperative.”
In addition, the 1% for the Planet partnership further extends Summit’s commitment to the outdoors community, and to setting pace as an industry leader. Summit is the official coffee partner of the semiannual Outdoor Retailer show, sponsors athletes such as ultramarathon runner Courtney Dauwalter and mountaineer Phil Henderson, and new in 2022, is the official coffee partner of Vacation Races. Summit Coffee, along with its Find Your Summit™ brand, will be at the OR Snow Show in late January, plus activating at other events throughout 2022.
The momentum doesn’t stop here. Summit Coffee is also in the process of applying for B Corp certification, among other efforts such as achieving Climate Neutral status, to emerge on the forefront of sustainability in our various industries and communities. In addition to the national roasting distribution business, Summit has seven open cafés in North Carolina, with six more in development in the Southeast.
