Anglers win more than $29,000 in winnings
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (July 31, 2019) – Kevin Harvey, of Bourg, Louisiana, and Kelly Dupre, of Houma, Louisiana, weighed a two-fish limit that totaled 16.53 pounds to win the final regular-season event for the Louisiana Division of the IFA Redfish Tour presented by Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s on July 27, at Houma, Louisiana. The team won a fully rigged Ranger RB190 boat prize package powered by a 90-horsepower, four-stroke Mercury outboard.
The team found good weather with a few scattered showers during competition.
During practice, Harvey found it difficult to find quality fish and opted to run to the Lake Boudreaux area, the one place he found a good amount of fish.
“There weren’t many fish to be found because they moved to the bigger water from the high tide,” said Harvey. “The majority of the fish were in the lake. We started sharing fish early in the morning in the broken marsh area but we knew the heavier fish needed to win would be singled out.”
Dupre caught the first keeper around 9:30 a.m. and the duo kept grinding through the day, catching a few more but nothing they would eventually keep. An incoming storm threatened to end their day and chances of a win.
“The clouds started coming and the wind picked up,” said Harvey. “It wasn’t looking good with one 8-pounder and a small 7-pounder in the box. It wasn’t looking good. Then I saw a fish halfway raised up on the water. I threw up in a patch of grass and as soon as he closed the distance I flicked off of the grass and he ate it.”
The team had the best luck throwing a 5-1/2-inch Berkley Havoc grass pig. After fishing the IFA Redfish Tour for three years, Harvey was satisfied to come out on top of such a talented field of anglers.
“I put in a lot of time in on the water,” said Harvey. “You got to put yourself in contention with the right fish. I have been close before but never won one. I always want to be top of the competition no matter what I do.”
Along with the new Ranger boat, the team took home $2,850 in Anglers Advantage cash.
Second-place finishers Jacob Brown, of Houma, Louisiana, and Justin Albarado, of Grand Isle, Louisiana, weighed a total of 16.09 pounds to take home $3,985. The anglers fished the Lost Lake area by sight-fishing Berkley Gulp! and spoons and blind-casting over shell beds.
Bo Favre and Justin Ladner, both of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, weighed 15.88 pounds for third place. The team reported good conditions and caught more then 30 fish throughout the day. They relied on Berkley Gulp! shrimp and Berkley Powerbait swimbaits to pull their fish from the Dularge area. In total, the anglers won $3,206 in winnings.
The next stop for the IFA Redfish Tour is set for Corpus Christi, on August 10. Teams that compete in at least two regular-season events will be qualified for the 2019 IFA Redfish Tour Championship.
