IFA Redfish Tour event pays out more than $39,000
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (August 21, 2018) – Jeremy Reeves, of Orange, Texas, and Tony Viator, of Winnie, Texas, weighed a two-fish limit that totaled 17.87 pounds to win the second regular-season event for the Texas Division of the IFA Redfish Tour presented by Cabela’s on August 18 at Orange, Texas. The team won a fully rigged Ranger RB190 boat prize package powered by a 90-horsepower, four-stroke Mercury outboard.
Sunny skies and calm conditions allowed the team to sight-fish throughout the early morning, catching approximately 10 fish at their first location
“We had mid-15 pounds about 8:00,” said Reeves. “We had plenty of fish in the area, they just quit wanting to eat the lure. We started getting a lot of refusals. Whenever that happens, I know to not try and force them so we made a long run of about 30 miles south to another marsh. We caught a few fish there.”
Later, while running in a canal on the way to a pond, the anglers noticed fish swirling at the banks and stopped to stop and throw a few casts. The serendipitous stop resulted in landing a 9.58-pound red, which was the largest of the event.
“We had actually never fished in that particular spot before,” said Reeves. “It’s one of those deals where you need to be aware of your surroundings and take what the Lord gives you.”
The kicker fish was caught on Berkley Gulp! under a popping cork and won the $500 Berkley Gulp! Big Redfish award along with $250 credit to the Berkley website. The team added $2,310 in Anglers Advantage cash for a total of $30,060 in winnings.
“I really like the IFA’s format,” said Reeves. “They have low entry fees and a great sponsor in Ranger Boats. The big prizes get a lot of attention. Everything the IFA does is top notch.”
Chuck Braddock, of Mont Belvieu, Texas, and Richard Gidrey, of Corpus Christi, Texas, weighed 16.87 pounds to win the $1,000 second-place prize. The team added $1,155 in Anglers Advantage cash.
Third-place finishers Trey Pearson, of Groves, Texas and Jerrod Broussard, of Nederland, Texas, brought 15.87 pounds to the scales to take home $2,080 in winnings. The anglers found their fish by fan casting with spoons in Sabine Lake.
The next stop for the IFA Redfish Tour is set for Ruskin, Florida, on September 15. Teams that compete in at least two regular-season events will be qualified for the 2018 IFA Redfish Tour Championship.
