U.S. Mixed Team Magic Ends Trap Competition at Pan Am Games

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – July 30, 2019) – Three events, three gold and silver medals and two huge quotas. That’s the takeaway from the 2019 Pan American Games Trap competition for Team USA as events ended Wednesday with more podium domination, this time in Trap Mixed Team.

Today’s podium presence in Lima, Peru adds to a jubilant July for USA Shooting’s Trap program that included 12 medals, three world titles, three Pan Am titles and two ultra-important Olympic quotas. Here’s the complete breakdown:

  • Crowning of an individual World Champion & Pan Am Games Champion in Ashley Carroll
  • Pan Am Champion Brian Burrows and silver medalist Derek Haldeman
  • Obtaining 2 Quota Spots in Men’s Trap for the first time since 2008
  • Pan Am Mixed Team Gold and Silver Medals
  • Pan Am Silver Medal by Rachel Tozier
  • Women’s Open and Junior Women’s World Team titles
  • Junior Men’s Team World Championship bronze medal
  • Three other World Champs Finals appearances
  • Junior World Cup individual gold by Faith Pendergrass
  • Junior World Cup Mixed Team bronze by Carey Garrison and Roe Reynolds
  • A combined 15 top-15 performances at both the World Championships and Junior World Cup

After Tuesday’s thrilling finish in Men’s Trap in which Brian Burrows (Fallbrook, California) and Derek Haldeman (Sunbury, Ohio) completed the biggest U.S. shotgun goal in nearly 11 years, Wednesday’s Mixed Team event was a chance for the U.S. squads to have some fun and add to their already impressive accolades.  Read the U.S. Men’s Trap Recap Release. . .

Ashley Carroll (Solvang, California) did just that with a July she’ll look back on after her career is over and realize just how special it was.  In one month, she became World Champion, World Team Champion and Pan Am Games double champion. Joining in on the celebration this time was her boyfriend and Mixed Team partner Haldeman as they defeated Burrows and Rachel Tozier in an all-USA gold-medal Final Wednesday.  Tied at 42/50 targets, fittingly it would go to an eight-target shoot-off with Carroll and Haldeman ultimately prevailing.  Team Canada would earn the bronze.

Tozier and Burrows were the top qualifiers connecting on 140/150 shots while Haldeman and Carroll tied for second with the Canadian duo of Matthew Van Haaren and Elizabeth Longley.

Also, getting underway Wednesday was Men’s Rapid Fire Pistol as Keith Sanderson (Colorado Springs, Colorado) shot a great score of 291 and sits in second place while Jackson Leverett(Bainbride, Georgia) also shot well with a 286 and is ranked sixth. Competition in this event concludes Thursday and the U.S. is seeking one additional Olympic quota in this event after Jackson’s brother, Henry, earned a quota earlier this year in a World Cup event in Beijing, China.

Women’s Air Rifle will be contested as well Thursday with U.S. Champion Ali Weisz (Belgrade, Montana) and Mindy Miles (Weatherford, Texas) set to compete. Weisz will be out to win a medal and earn an Olympic quota to add to the quota already earned by Miles at the 2018 Championship of the Americas.

Six-time Olympic medalist and 2015 U.S. Pan American Games Team Flagbearer Kim Rhode (El Monte, California) makes her 2019 Pan Am Games debut on Thursday alongside teammate and 2017 World Champion Dania Vizzi (Odessa, Florida) in Women’s Skeet.  Skeet is a two-day competition.  Both Olympic Quotas have already been earned for Team USA in this event.
